there is no reason to suppose that this practice will be
discontinued in Hongkong, as in many European ports it is
becoming more usual.
It is, of course, possible that much larger cargoes will be landed in future, but the tendency as regards cargo vessels seems towards a more frequent Eervice rather than larger ships, so that an ample
number of berths is the first requisite. In any case,
I think that the dimensione suggested are suitable for the portion of the scheme to be first carried out.
12. In the Consulting Engineers' plan, sufficient space does not seem to be allowed for open-air storage of heavy goods, and I have allotted for this purpose a length of 200 ft. between each barth, besides about
The centre portion,
90 ft. at each end of the piers.
between the godowne, might advantageously be roofed in,
and furnished with overhead cranes.
13. The East quay wall of Jetty Fo.6 is shown unaltered in position, but as a single pier with ships lying on both sides would be liable to serious congestion, I would suggest that the area to the N.. of Jetty No.6 be kept for junks and other small craft and that only the West wall be adapted for deep draft
vessels.
The line of the enda of the Jetties remains,
as shown in the Consulting Engineers' plan.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your obedient servant,
(Sgd) Somers H. Ellis,
M. Inat.C.E.
